Reading for Comprehension
The main focus of this program is to develop good reading comprehension skills needed for high school success. In order to accomplish this goal, direct instruction and repetitive practice with English vocabulary and grammar must be included.
The vocabulary series provides systematic, sequential development through the high school level. The words are carefully selected based on the frequency of their use, grade level literature, school textbooks, and SAT prep books. The diverse and interesting exercises aid the student in understanding the meaning of each word in a variety of ways. Research has shown that direct vocabulary instruction can significantly improve comprehension. Vocabulary knowledge is essential for success on all of today's high-stakes tests. The National Reading Panel has identified vocabulary development as a critical element of early reading instruction. Students must be able to understand the words they are decoding in order to successfully comprehend what they are reading.
The grammar program also is presented with direct instruction. It is easy to understand and use. Concepts are presented in small increments and are followed by sufficient practice for mastery. The early emphasis is on capitalization, punctuation, parts of speech, and sentence structure. Each exercise builds on the previous set. Repetition promotes the mastery of all grammar aspects.
Exercises that target TAKS state-standardized testing objectives in reading comprehension and writing skills are included in the curriculum. By exposing the student to the TAKS format throughout the year, he will approach this annual test with confidence and familiarity.
Developing excellent reading comprehension skills is a major cornerstone for all learning. Student word knowledge is strongly linked to academic accomplishment. The Beacon Hill program offers a complete curriculum that correlates reading comprehension and rich vocabulary development.
